Robert Kubica will not be leaving the Renault team ahead of his first season with the Enstone outfit. The management of the Polish driver had expressed its feelings over the ownership change of the team although, following some investigation, the ex BMW man will remain at the diamond squad for the 2010 season.
With three quarters of the shares in Renault F1 having been purchased by Luxembourg-based firm Genii Capital, Daniel Morelli admitted that a possibility remained of Kubica leaving Renault even before the first race of the year.
”We are going in the right direction”, the driver manager explained to BBC Sport. ”There were no doubts, really, but it was very important that we understood who was in the key roles in the team and of course also the budget - it is fundamental you have that for the (in-season) updates to the car”.
Morelli also denies that he and Kubica attempted to take advantage of the situation and request a pay rise. ”It is totally untrue that we were asking for more money”, he continued firmly. ”It is not in our interests to take advantage. We want the money for the team”.
”Robert wants a performing car. It’s useless if the driver gets more money if you have a weak car and lose (on-track) bonuses. It’s better to score points and podiums than to earn more money”.
